Why replies get lost
- You read it at a bad time. You were walking, working or tired, and the message scrolled away.
- The reply needs a little thought. A question about plans, a hard update, or a favor, so you put it off.
- Nothing brings it back. The thread is still there, but you only see it when the person messages again.
A 30-second habit that fixes most of it
- When you can’t answer right now, open the person in BlackBook.
- Write one line: what they asked or what you want to say.
- Set a reminder for a time you will be free, such as tonight or Saturday morning.
- When it fires, reply in your messaging app and clear the reminder.
That is all. The note matters because it saves you from re-reading the thread to remember the point.
Phone tools vs a personal CRM
| Unread flag, Reminders app, memory | BlackBook | |
|---|---|---|
| Remember what to say | Re-read the thread, if you find it | A note on the person’s page |
| Come back at the right time | An unread dot you learn to ignore | Reminders per person, with notifications |
| Context about the person | Scattered across apps | Notes, How We Met field and history in one place |
| Who have I not talked to lately | You have to notice | Pulse suggests who to reach out to next |
| Reads your messages | Not applicable | No. You add the reminders yourself |
| Account | Depends on the app | No BlackBook account; data on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud |
Messages worth setting a reminder for
- A friend going through something hard, where a quick “thinking of you” isn’t enough
- Plans that depend on checking your calendar
- A work contact who asked for an intro, a document or an answer
- Someone you promised to “catch up soon,” with a date attached
The free plan covers 25 people, which is usually enough for the people you owe a reply. Keep sensitive details such as passwords out of notes.

Frequently asked questions
Does BlackBook read my messages or tell me who I haven’t answered?
No. BlackBook doesn’t read your texts or email, so it can’t know which messages are unanswered. You add the person and a short note, then set a reminder. It trades automation for privacy: your messages stay in your messaging apps.
How is this different from marking a text as unread or using Reminders?
Those work for a one-off. They don’t keep what you learned about the person, such as what they were stressed about or what you promised, and they don’t show you who you haven’t spoken to in a while. BlackBook keeps the reminder together with notes and history on the person’s page.
What should I write in the note?
One line is enough: what they asked, what you want to say, or what is going on in their life. “Asked about dinner Saturday, check my calendar first” or “Her dad is in the hospital, ask how he is” turns a vague guilty feeling into a message you can send in a minute.
What if I waited too long to reply?
Reply anyway, briefly and honestly. A line like “Sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been thinking about your message” works better than a long apology. The blog guide on reconnecting with someone you lost touch with has example messages.
Can I set reminders for people I just want to stay in touch with?
Yes. A reminder per person works for a specific reply or a recurring nudge. Pulse also suggests who to reach out to next from your notes, history and reminders.
Is my data private?
BlackBook needs no account. Your people and notes live on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud, not on a BlackBook server. There are no ad SDKs, and your data is never sold.
Is BlackBook free?
BlackBook is free to download with a free plan of 25 people, two notes per person and 30 days of interaction history. BlackBook Pro is an optional subscription: in the US it’s $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and the annual plan includes a 1-week free trial. Prices are shown in the app.
